Among them was a thriving community of Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution in Europe who turned the city into a vibrant hub of German-speaking intellectual life and Viennese-style café society. These immigrants included architects trained in Vienna who brought with them a preference for Avant-garde architecture and an expertise that was embraced by a city experiencing massive growth. This lecture explores how these émigré architects—drawing from the principles of Adolf Loos, from the progressive social housing models of “Red Vienna,” and the professional teachings of the Technische Hochschule—forged a distinct “Vienna School” of architecture in Haifa, a city which was itself portrayed as “Red” at the time. By presenting key residential and commercial landmarks across the city, the talk demonstrates how these professionals successfully adapted Vienna’s architecture modernism to Haifa’s climate, topography, and cultural landscapes, leaving an indelible architectural legacy that transformed the city into an exceptional and unique ensemble of Central European-Mediterranean modernism.

20.
